Picturesquely located on the Vistula hills, the city of Sandomierz is famous for its medieval urban layout, impressive monuments and beautiful landscapes. It has the prestigious status of the Historic Monument and is an important tourist and cultural center.
The city was a placer where rulers of Poland used to live. In the chronicles of Gallus Anonymus one can read that, next to Cracow and Wrocław, Sandomierz was one of the main cities of the Kingdom of Poland. The city developed due to its location along an important trade route. Thanks to the specific microclimate in its surroundings, Sandomierz was also known for its viticulture. In the 21st century, the popular TV series "Ojciec Mateusz" ("Father Matthew"), contributed to the fame of the city - it even has its own museum.
Visiting Sandomierz, it is worth seeing the 14th-century Opatów Gate, the sloping market square with the town hall, the Underground Tourist Route, the Oleśnicki Tenement, the 13th-century St. Jacob church, the cathedral basilica founded by King Casimir the Great, the Długosz House and the river promenade.
Water sports fans have a marina and water equipment rental on their disposal, and cyclists can take advantage of numerous cycling routes. The nearby loessial ravines and the "Pieprzowe Góry" (Pepper Mountains) nature reserve invite for walks. There are also interesting cultural events organized in the city, such as: the Jagiellonian Fair, the Knight's Tournament or the "Music in Sandomierz" Festival.
