Krzemionki Opatowskie are among the most important tourist attractions of the Świętokrzyskie Province. There is the only neolithic striped flint mine in Poland preserved to this day. In 1994, it was recognized as a Historic Monument. You can visit the underground tourist route leading through the mine corridors or see the reconstructed Neolithic settlement.
Striped flint was to the most valuable natural resources in the Neolithic period. Weapons, everyday objects and jewelry were made of it. Its acquisition was dangerous and involved the drilling of multi-kilometer underground corridors. Such corridors were found in 1922 near Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski.Today, in the former mines, there is an underground tourist route. In the walls of the corridors you can see the flint stuck on it. You can also see old workings in which figures of working people have been placed. A reconstructed Neolithic settlement is located close to the mine. It shows what everyday life of prehistoric miners looked like. Every year the settlement is hosting many archaeological festivities and outdoor events.Less
