Iłża Castle

Gothic in the original design of the castle in Iłża was built in the first half of the fourteenth century on the initiative of the Bishop of Krakow John Grot. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and modernized - as a result it gained a renaissance decor and fortified its fortifications. It was owned by the Bishops of Cracow until 1789. It was hosted by Polish kings, bishops, prominent humanians and scholars. Currently the building has the status of secured ruins, made available for sightseeing. From the distance, on the hill, you can see the preserved tower and fragments of the ramparts. The castle ruins lead steep stairs.

After the destruction after the Swedish Flood it was renewed. Shortly afterwards, further renovations were needed due to the invasion of Hungarian prince Jerzy Rakocze. Also the struggle with the Bar confederates severely damaged the castle.

Another centuries are the gradual fall of the castle into ruin. He experienced two fires - the first took place in the eighteenth century, the second in the nineteenth century. Remnants of the castle were used as building materials for houses and townhouses. An inn and a famous Sunderland faience factory were also built. The castle also suffered serious damage during World War I and the First World War.

Historical events, including knights' tournaments, take place at the castle.
