Underground tourist route
Local name: Podziemna trasa turystyczna
Dungeons in Sandomierz are a historic cellar system from the 14th and 15th centuries. Fragments of the original walls have survived in the complex. The Tourist Route has 34 rooms located on a 470 m section, and during its 45-minute tour you can listen to legends associated with this place. In the tunnels there are interesting exhibitions, and the walls are decorated with colorful frescoes made with an unusual technique of stripping plaster layers. The entrance to the tunnels is located at Oleśnicka Street, in the vicinity of the Market Square.
The underground system is a remnant of former merchant warehouses, built over the years in the form of single chambers and corridors. Systematically expanded and joined together, they formed a complex with excavations reaching up to 12 m, running under eight townhouses. Dungeons and tunnels also had defensive functions, providing shelter from the enemy. The route ends at the Sandomierz Town Hall. Tunnels are available throughout the year.
