Sandomierz Old Town
Local name: Starówka w Sandomierzu
Sandomierz is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in Swietokrzyskie province. Mostly it is due to the perfectly preserved Old Town. It is located on the hill above the Vistula valley an it stretches around two squares – Market and Small Market. This medieval city can be proud of its scenic market square, partly preserved city walls, as well as a cathedral decorated with polychrome.
During the Middle Ages, Sandomierz was situated at the crossroads of trade routes. Thanks to incomes from trade and storage of goods, it developed very quickly. Medieval old town is located on the hill. It is surrounded by partly preserved city walls with Opatów Gate, which has a viewpoint on the top. One can go to the Market Square from here. In its center there is a Gothic brick town hall with a Renaissance tower. It is surrounded by - just as picturesque, but built in much later period - tenement houses, with outstanding Oleśnicki Family tenement house. Similar, but smaller houses, are located around the Small Market. From both places you can go by walk to the gothic cathedral which stands at the edge of the Old Town. The Old Town is full of restaurants, cafes and bars, where you can rest after exploring.Less
