Opatów Gate

Local name: Brama Opatowska

The Opatowska Gate is one of the most recognizable monuments of Sandomierz. It is a remnant of city fortifications. Its white, Renaissance attic towers above the buildings of the Old Town. The Opatowska Gate is a great vantage point. From the observation deck on its roof visitors can admire the beautiful panorama of the city and its surroundings.

The building of the Opatowska Gate is connected with surrounding the city with defensive walls during the times of Casimir the Great. It is the only one left of the four former gates that existed at that time and led to the city. It was strengthened with the portcullis closing at night. In the 16th century, a high, Renaissance attic was added to the Opatowska Gate. It was a procedure that was to strengthen the defense of the building.

Already in the interwar period, it has been recognized that it is an excellent vantage point and after mounting a reinforced concrete ceiling it was opened to visitors. For these purposes it is used until today. From the observation deck visitors can admire Sandomierz and its surroundings. With good visibility one can see the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Holy Cross Mountains), sometimes even the peaks of the Tatras are visible.
