Church of the Holy Spirit
Local name: Kościół św. Ducha
The Church of the Holy Spirit is a monument which brings the attention of every tourist passing between the main square and the Opatów Gate. The monumental, classicist facade holds the richly decorated, late-Baroque interior.
The history of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Sandomierz dates back to the 13th century. It was then when the small, wooden church operating as a hospital's chapel stood here. Buildings of the hospital which also served as a refuge for poor were situated nearby. The hospital and church were administered by Regular Canons. The wooden church burnt at the beginning of the 14th century during the Lithuanian raid. The Gothic brick church, which, in later centuries, was rebuilt into Baroque style, was constructed in its place. In the 19th century, the large, classicist facade with triangular tympanum supported by pilasters was constructed. The present interior represents late-Baroque style. The most valuable movable monument is the 16th-century figure of Pensive Christ situated in the side chapel.Less
