Długosz House - Diocesan Museum

Local name: Dom Długosza - Muzeum Diecezjalne

There are only three freestanding, Gothic brick houses in addition to compact buildings in Poland. One of them is located in Sandomierz. It is the house of Jan Dlugosz, also called Mansionarnia. The Diocesan Museum is now housed in its restored interiors.

In 1476 Jan Długosz founded a house in Sandomierz for priests of mansionaries. He stood on the edge of the Old Town, on a slope on the Vistula River. Its builder was master Jan from Krakow. It is one of the most valuable architectural monuments in the city. Brick, rectangular building is covered with a high pitched roof. In the gable walls there are blends, while the walls are decorated with zendrówki, ie dark-smoked bricks, diamonds. Into the entrance is through a large hallway and gothic portal. In the interior of the building since 1936 is located Diocesan Museum. It has numerous liturgical objects, old books and religious paintings in its collection.
