Krzyżtopór is one of the most unique defensive constructions in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Built in the first half of the 17th century, the property of the Ossoliński family, despite the fact it's currently a ruin, impress with the size and complex shape. Based on the Italian palazzo in fortezza, the castle in Ujazd had a shape of horseshoe integrated into the pentagonal fortalice with towers.
Krzyżtopór took its name from the Krzysztof Ossoliński's coat of arms. It was he, who initiated the construction of the family headquarters. The works were stopped after his death. His inheritor and son, Krzysztof Baldwin Ossoliński lived only slightly longer - died heirless in the Battle of Zboriv. The castle was never finished, what throughout the ages resulted in more and more fantastical legends about hidden passages and caches.Krzyżtopór was considered the biggest palace building in Europe until the construction of Versailles. It was built in the palazzo in fortezza style. The palace built on a horseshoe plane is located within the visible towers. Its greatness can still be seen, however, the only visible parts are the walls covered with decaying plaster. The spots where the portraits of the family members used to be placed can be found above the windows in the courtyard. The castle was secured again in the state of permanent ruin at the beginning of the 21st century. Part of it was covered with a roof what made a space for picnics and feasts. The tourist track, which gives an opportunity to view the entire building starting from the cellars and ending on the upper floors, is also available there. The castle's garden will be reconstructed in the future.Less
