Being the capital of Roztocze, Zamość is one of the most beautiful Polish cities with an interesting urban layout. The Ideal City, founded in accordance with the Renaissance concepts of man and the world, is today entered on the UNESCO list.
In 1580, the Grand Chancellor of the Crown, Jan Zamoyski, issued a location document for the city of Zamość. It was created on a raw root in a place that had not been inhabited so far. The creator of its urban concept was the Italian architect Bernardo Morando. The city created in this way referred to the anthropomorphic concept.
The layout of the Old Town in Zamość has been preserved to this day. Its head is the Zamoyski Palace, its backbone is Grodzka Street crossing the Great Market Square, its organs the Salt and Water Market, and the bastions used for defense became legs.
The heart of the Old Town and the greatest attraction of Zamość is the Great Market Square with its Renaissance Town Hall and colorful Armenian tenement houses, which today house the Zamość Museum. Today, the square, 100-meter-long square, has plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars, and in summer there are colorful gardens under umbrellas.
In the "Ideal City" there was a place for followers of various religions. The most important temple in the city is the Zamość Cathedral with a bell tower with a viewpoint. In the neighborhood there is the Sacred Museum of the Zamość Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum. In addition to Catholic temples, within the old town you can find an Orthodox church and a perfectly preserved Renaissance Synagogue, which now houses a museum and educational center about Zamość Jews.
From the very beginning, Zamość was a fortified city. They are well preserved and form a ring around the Old Town.
