Zamość Cathedral

Local name: Katedra Zamojska

Zamość Cathedral is one of the most impressive monuments of modern culture. Its interior presents four large paintings on canvas from 1627 depicting the life of Saint Thomas the Apostle, seatings in the presbytery, the beautiful iron balustrade with the rich plant decoration, and many more interesting architectonic pieces.

The undergrounds and crypts are located under the cathedral. It is here where ashes of the Zamoyski Family Fee Tails from the period between the 16th century and modern times were stored. The present 17th-century massive altar consists of six Baroque candle holders. Another valuable object is the late-Renaissance pax with relics of Saint John of Dukla placed in the tabernacle. There are also numerous figures of saints decorating the altar. The narrow windows with the stone decoration and short side chapels are also worthy of attention.

Zamość Cathedral was founded in the second half of the 16th century by Chancellor of Poland Jan Zamoyski and designed by Bernard Morand. After the death of the architect, the works were continued, hence the deviations from the original style which can be spotted in the church and chapels. The church was reconstructed and its facade was changed in the first half of the 19th century. Many parts of the equipment and coats of arms of the Zamoyski Family were removed from the inside.
