Krasnobród Sanctuary
Local name: Krasnobrodzkie Sanktuarium Maryjne
Krasnobród Sanctuary consists of the church which houses the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Krasnobród placed at the main altar.
The Baroque building was constructed between 1690 and 1699. Its interior impresses with four side altars richly decorated with gilding and depictions of Our Lady of Częstochowa, Saint Valentine, Crucified Christ, and Saint Anne. The altar was made between 1774 and 1776 by Jan Maucher. The church is a votive offering by Maria Kazimiera, wife of King John III Sobieski, given as thanks for healing she experienced in Krasnobród in 1680. The monastic buildings are adjoined to the church from the left side. The history of the small painting of 9 cm x 14 cm is very interesting. It dates back to the first half of the 17th century when it was made in an unknown printing house. It was offered as a gift in the place where it is said that Mother of God appeared before Jakub Ruszczyk, the inhabitant of Szarowole, and healed him. The chapel and gifts it housed were destroyed by Khmelnytsky's Tatars. The only thing that remained is the painting found in mud which is currently placed in the corner of much bigger copy situated in the altar's center.Less
