Świnoujście is a health and holiday resort located between the Szczecin Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Located on the islands, the city has wide, sandy, well landscaped beaches and interesting monuments associated with the health resort and military history.
The city has one of the most interesting location in Poland. It lies on three large inhabited islands: Wolin, Uznam and Karsibór and 44 small islets. Communication between them takes place mainly by ferries. Islets located on the Szczecin Lagoon are a nesting place for many species of seabirds.
Świnoujście as the health resort developed in the first half of the 19th century on the basis of deposits of mineral waters and therapeutic mud found here. Rheumatic diseases, diseases of the locomotor system, respiratory system and obesity are treated here. There is a spa park by the sea, and many old health resort villas in its surroundings.
Due to its location, Świnoujście was of great strategic importance. There was a Prussian fortress here, which remains in the form of forts, including the most famous Forts Gerhard and Angel, which can be visited today. On the island of Karsibór, there is a pool of German U-boats from the World War II. In the post-military area, in the vicinity of Fort Gerhardt, there is also the highest (68 meter high) lighthouse on the Polish Coast, from the terrace of which you can admire a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
