Ducal Castle

Local name: Zamek Książąt Pomorskich

The Ducal Castle is one of the best preserved Renaissance monuments. Not only its beautiful architecture but also the picturesque hill by the Oder on top of which the castle is situated attracts the attention of many. Destroyed during World War II, the building was renovated in the 1960s and 1970s. Today it operates as a cultural facility.

It consists of concert hall, theatre, opera, cabaret and modern cinema. The monument is a remain after one of the biggest Pomeranian families - the House of Griffins which reigned over the Pomerania Dutchy for many years. After the death of the last family member, it functioned as a mint of Prussian garrison.

The original building was constructed in the 14th century, however, it burnt during the fire and was rebuilt two centuries later on the order of Prince John Frederick. The castle was built on a quadrangle plan and has two floors (also in the expanded side wings). What preserved from the newer parts are the clock tower and waterworks.
