Szczecin Cathedral

Local name: Katedra św. Jakuba

The beautiful, three-nave Gothic basilica attracts attention with its silhouette which stands out against the background of the much lower buildings of the surrounding streets. The massive tower, topped with a spire, reaches 110 m up emphasizing the importance of this greatest and most important church in Szczecin.

Until 1456, the church had two towers. When one of them collapsed, it was rebuilt into a single-tower system and it remains so to this day. In 1895, the church measured 119 m. Unfortunately, the slender tented roof collapsed during a construction disaster. Currently, the temple is 80 m long and 40 m wide. The height of the main nave is 23 m.

At level of 53 meters, there is a viewpoint from which visitors can admire the panorama of the city. In the basilica there is a diocesan museum, and outside one can admire the Great Bell made in 1682. The real gem of the cathedral are also stained glass windows.
