Geneva is often referred to as the most peaceful city in the world. It houses the European headquarters of the United Nations and the headquarters of the Red Cross. Located on Lake Geneva, the city also has a nice old town and picturesque boulevards and plenty of cafes and confectioneries.
Located in the western part of Switzerland, near the border, Geneva is a cosmopolitan city. About half of its inhabitants do not have Swiss citizenship, and on the streets you can hear languages from all parts of the world. This is largely due to the fact that the city is the seat of many international organizations and an important congress center. Since the Renaissance, the city was the place from which the thinkers originated and new mental currents spread to the world, so that the city was sometimes called "Protestant Rome."
The great advantage of Geneva is its location on the lake and at the same time at the foot of the Alps. Their highest peak, Mont Blanc is visible from here, and on the lake beats the highest in Europe, the Jet d'eau fountain with a height of 140 m. A popular form of entertainment are cruises on the lake with the possibility of watching extensive panoramas. Those who like to look at the area from above can take a cable car to the Mont Salève border on the French side, which offers a magnificent view of the lake and Geneva.
The Old Town of Geneva is similar to other such neighborhoods in Switzerland. They are made up of streets crossing at a right angle with picturesque tenement houses and church towers rising above. There are numerous museums here, including the Red Cross and Crescent Museum, as well as an opera and theater of world renown, as well as a shopping district with exclusive stores offering, among others Swiss watches, the production of which has just started in Geneva.
