Around the building there are green areas, in the park there are works of art set up referring to various sports fields and events. An interesting fact is one square meter of sidewalk brought from the Olympic village in Barcelona.
The museum was opened in 1993, on the initiative of Juan Antonio Samaranch - the then chairman of the IOC. In 1995 they were awarded the title of the European Museum of the Year. The building was designed by a Mexican architect - Pedro Ramirez Vazquez.
