Museum of Natural History
Local name: Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle
The Museum of Natural History in Geneva (Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle) is the largest institution of its kind in the country. You can see here, among others a collection of insects by Louis Sébastien Jurine and models of invertebrates by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka. One of the biggest attractions is the two-headed turtle named Janus - the museum mascot.
Interesting is also a replica of the skeleton of Lucy - a female Australopithenic, which was found in Ethiopia in 1974 (the name comes from the song The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds").
Janus turtle was born in an incubator at the museum in 1997. It is the only turtle with such longevity that has two heads. The staff take care of him very carefully, Janus can count on massages and warm baths.
The museum's main purpose is to protect Switzerland's natural heritage, conduct scientific research and educational activities. It gathers examples of regional fauna, a collection of mammals and birds from around the world, and many other specimens.
