St. Peter's Cathedral Geneva

Local name: Cathédrale Saint-Pierre Genève

Saint-Pierre Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Geneva. This temple is characterized by the presence of several architectural styles. It has Romanesque, Gothic and neoclassical elements. altar, windows with stained glass, chandelier and chapels, and the basement of the mosaic and baptismal font dating from the early centuries of Christianity.

This church was built, rebuilt and expanded from the 11th to the 18th century, which is the reason for the appearance of various styles here. In the 18th century, a disproportionate dome was added to the church. The tower overlooks Geneva. The facade of the building, however, represents the neoclassical style.

In the 16th century, Jan Kalwin preached here. According to his teachings, the interior was to be as ascetic and raw as possible, so there are no rich decorations outside the chapels. Excavations are carried out in the basement of the cathedral and an extensive archaeological site has been made available for tourists.
