Often called the capital of Polish sailing, Giżycko is a tourist destination located between the Masurian lakes of Kisajno and Niegocin. It is a good place for summer recreation and water tourism, and both the city and its surroundings offer many interesting monuments, including the Boyen Fortress.
The beginnings of Giżycko are related to the fact that these lands belonged to the Teutonic Order State. In the 14th century, a castle was erected on the isthmus between the lakes, which has now been turned into a hotel. The second of the defensive monuments, and at the same time the most important attraction of Giżycko, is the Prussian Boyen Fortress, built in the mid-nineteenth century. Currently, it can be visited, and in the courtyard, open-air events and concerts are held in summer.
Another attraction in Giżycko, the Rotary Bridge, is connected with the fortress. There are only a few such facilities in Europe. It was built at the end of the 19th century to provide access to the Boyen Fortress, and nowadays the manual opening and closing of the crossing attracts many tourists who may even receive a commemorative medal to testify to this attraction.
A large part of Giżycko's attractions is related to water and sailing. There is a marina and a modern pier, which is a popular walking area. From the port, you can go on a cruise on the Masurian lakes by passenger ship. There are also kayak, boat and other water equipment rentals nearby. There is also a city beach with a bathing area at the port. On the other hand, people who like hiking and walking can choose one of the many routes in the area, including those leading to the scenic St. Bruno.
