Wolf's Lair

Local name: Wilczy Szaniec

Wolf's Lair was a top secret city which between 1941 and 1944 served as the main base of Adolf Hitler. The site was built to the east of the village of Gierłoż. It consisted of shelters, airports, power stations, barracks, railway station, and heat-only boiler stations. It's the very place of the failed attempt on Adolf Hitler's life which took place in July 1944. It is also here, in the center of Masuria, where important decisions were made (such as the construction of new concentration camps).

Visitors can view the building which was used by Hitler's bodyguard during the war. Today, a restaurant and hotel operate here. The ruins of the so-called conference barrack, where the failed assassination of the leader of the Third Reich took place, can be found nearby. The rest of the buildings contain the building of the shorthand service, food storage or the ruins of Adolf Hitler's bunker. There is a possibility to go through the well-preserved passage of the connecting bunker. The whole is complemented by monuments, memory plaques and the board presenting the state of the site. Wolf's Lair can be explored individually or with a guide.

Not only subordinates of the main leader of Germany came to Wolf's Lair but also representatives of allies of the Third Reich such as Benito Mussolini who visited the place several times. The site operated until the time Red Army reached east borders of East Prussia in October 1944. The destroyed city was cleared from mines twice. The museum was opened for visits in 1959. Nowadays, the site is popular among Polish and foreign tourists.
