Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum
Local name: Muzeum im. Wojciecha Kętrzyńskiego
The museum has been operating since 1946, which makes it one of the oldest in the province. His collections mainly concern the history of the city and the region. A significant part of them are exhibits secured right after the war by the founder of the museum, Zofia Licharewa. The original seat of this institution was the building of the former detention center. From 1967, it was the rebuilt Teutonic castle.
The collected collections come from the fields of archeology, numismatics, ethnography and geology. The most interesting exhibits include a collection of sculptures from the 15th century, coins and medals from the 17th - 19th century, and traditional equipment used in Masurian villages. The museum library may be interested in old prints from the 15th - 19th centuries, as well as historical copies of the local press. The collections of church manuscripts are also worth seeing. An additional attraction is the medieval St. Jacob.
The museum also conducts research activities. Archaeological, field and archival works are under way. The most interesting projects are certainly archaeological research of cemeteries from II-VII century
