The Reszel Castle is a neo-Gothic building of a massive silhouette, a enriched by a slender turret. In the castle complex there is also a tower and a gate leading to the inner courtyard. Nowadays, there is a hotel in the castle, while dungeons, a tower, and a gallery of modern art are open to the public.
The castle was built in 1350-1401, originally in the Gothic style and belonged to the bishops of Warmia. Besides the episcopal residence, the building also played the role of a frontier fortress. In the 15th century the castle passed into Polish hands and lost its defensive significance, and a hundred years later it was transformed into a hunting lodge by its then owner, Cardinal Andrzej Batory.
In the 18th century, a prison was located in the building, where many prisoners had been dying in horrible conditions. In 1807, the building was set on fire and in that state existed until the 1820s, when it has been restored to its present form. The renovated structure has preserved traces of the past medieval structures.
