Kętrzyn Castle

Local name: Zamek w Kętrzynie

The Teutonic castle in Kętrzyn is a Gothic building from the second half of the 14th century. It was built on a square plan, initially it had three wings surrounding the courtyard.

At the moment inside the castle there is the Regional Museum of Wojciech Kętrzyński (a regional branch of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury) and the City Library. Museum can be proud of its collections of furniture, sculptures, and paintings from the 15th to the 19th century. Basements of the northern wing of the Gothic building are the headquarters of the reenactment knightly brotherhood.

The southern wing of the building is occupied by Galeria Konik Mazurski (Mazurian Konik Gallery), which offers to visitors regional handicrafts. At the checkout desk of the museum in the eastern wing there is a stand with souvenirs and literature.

The castle had been reconstructed several times, and at the end of the 17th century a great fire took place there. In the years 1962 - 1967, thanks to the general renovation, the castle regained its Gothic character. This was helped by the addition of one floor with Gothic tops and a sloping roof in the northern wing, roof elevation, as well as the east and south wings.
