Paczków is a city that is often called "Polish Carcassonne". It received this name thanks to the perfectly preserved gothic fortifications, which have been almost completely preserved together with the gates and towers.
In the Middle Ages, Paczków belonged to the bishops of Wrocław, who formed their own principality in this area. It developed as a town, and then as a border town as an element of the state's defense system. For this reason, it was surrounded by defensive walls with towers, which are today the greatest attraction of Paczków and its symbol.
The city's defense system also included the church of St. John the Evangelist, which was fortified in the 16th century. It is located near a large, rectangular square surrounded by townhouses, from which streets diverged in a checkered pattern.
An interesting monument in Paczków is the 18th century Executioner's House, built in the half-timbered technique. It houses the Tourist Information Center and a small historical exhibition. In the city, you can also visit the Gas Museum located in the historic gasworks building from the beginning of the 20th century.
