Kłodzko Fortress

Local name: Twierdza Kłodzko

One of the largest and best preserved bastions in Poland covers the area of 32 ha and consists of the main fortress, the Sheep Mountain Fort, field fortifications and extensive undergrounds. A large part of it is open to visitors. One of the attractions is the underground labyrinth of mine corridors, as well as Wielki Kleszcz Fort. It is a place, where: a canteen, a bedroom, a casino, a lazaret, a casemate of a commander and shooting casemate are located. The attractiveness of the exposition is emphasized by multimedia technology. From the sightseeing bastion one can admire a beautiful view of the city and local area.

Bastion in Klodzko represents a powerful defensive system - dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries - built at Zamkowa Góra in the place of an ancient fortified castle. It owes its present shape to King of Prusia Frederick II the Great. The central part of the bastion is donjon surrounded by the chain of bastions, redut tongs and internal moats.

It lost its defensive character in the second half of the nineteen century, when it was transformed into warehouses and a prison. In its cellars the members of the January Uprising were being held, as well as prisoners of war of various nationalities during the Second World War. In 1944, Germans moved a number of strategic factories here. After the war, it was a place where warehouses and storehouses of the Polish Army were located and from the 1950s until 1990s - many government institutions.
