Tilburg is a historic university town and, in the past, one of the main textile centers of the Netherlands. One of the country's most famous museums of contemporary art, De Pont, is located here.
The first records of Tilburg come from the 8th century, when there was an agricultural settlement here. In the 15th century, a castle was built here, which has not survived to our times, and soon the developing city became an important center of fabric production. The local craftsmen had their own sheep farms, the wool of which was processed into materials. The history of their production can be found in the Museum of Textiles.
The center of Tilburg has nice buildings from different eras. The most impressive building is the Heikese Church, which owes its appearance to the neo-Gothic reconstruction from the 19th century. The two-tower Church of St. Joseph (called Heuvelse).
De Pont - Museum of Modern Art is located in the former textile factory arranged for exhibition purposes. It is a facility without a permanent exhibition, presenting temporary exhibitions from various fields of art, both domestic and foreign artists.
Zoo de Oliemeulen is very popular among visitors. Various exotic animals are bred here, and visitors can participate in feeding or playing with the animals. Those interested in biology can find interesting exhibitions at the Natural History Museum of Brabant.
