Railway museum

Local name: Spoorwegmuseum

The Het Spoorwegmuseum, or Dutch Railway Museum, is housed in the historic Utrecht Maliebaan station building. The whole museum is conceived as a space of adventure and discovery. The order of sightseeing is optional - you can start from the Great Discovery section to find out in what conditions the first steam locomotive was made and what it looked like.

You can also start with the biggest challenge (Trial by Fire) and, headed by the famous actor Rutger Hauer ("Android Hunter", "Hitchhiker") set off on a head-on collision with another train. A fascinating zone for children and adults is Techlab, in which, through simple experiments, you can learn about the mechanisms by which locomotives move.

The great advantage of the Spoorwegmuseum is the perfectly harmonious combination of authentic railway station machinery with multimedia and spatial installations. You can not only see the water tower, hydrant, real control room or spectacular carousel for rotating locomotives, but also talk to their employees and try many activities yourself.
