Cathedral tower
Local name: Domtoren
The tower-house, or Domtoren belfry, is the highest church tower in the Netherlands belonging to Saint Martin's Cathedral. Domplein Square separates it from the church. Its height is 112 meters, so it is a great viewpoint. It has a beautiful panorama of the city.
Domtoren is a belfry, so there could not be bells in it. Halfway up the tower, at a height of 49 meters hangs fourteen of them. You can hear them on Sundays, religious holidays and on special occasions. The heaviest bell is called Salvator and weighs about 8,000 kilograms. A little higher hangs the so-called carillon consisting of several dozen smaller bells.
The construction of the Dom tower began in 1321, but between 1328 and 1342, work was suspended due to lack of funds. It was not until 1382 that the impressive belfry was completed. It became the highest point of the Dom complex, symbolizing the bishop's secular and church authority.
