Picturesquely located at the foot of the Lovcen, Vrmac and Dobrota mountains, on a long narrow bay, Kotor is one of the most beautiful cities in Montenegro. The walled Old Town with narrow streets, huge churches and stone buildings has been preserved.
Kotor was founded in antiquity and throughout the centuries was inhabited by Illyrians, Greeks, Romans and Slavic peoples. He belonged to the Byzantine Empire, during which time the local walls and fortress were built, and later to the Republic of Venice. He experienced a period of accelerated development in the Middle Ages, which is evident in the perfectly preserved Old Town entered on the UNESCO list.
The Old Town is surrounded by rising towards the fortress of St. John's massive defensive walls. They are over 4 km long and are currently one of the main attractions of Kotor. You can walk them, admiring views not only of the city, but also of the surrounding mountains and the Bay of Kotor.
Inside the walls there is a tangle of streets filled with stone houses. Many of them remain shaded even in the middle of a hot day. Streets lead to squares, near which there are representative buildings from the Venetian rule, including the monumental cathedral of St. Truffle, Gothic and Baroque palaces and clock tower.
Today, the Old Town is the main place visited by tourists. The restaurants, bars and cafes here are full from mornings until late at night. Outside the walls there is a port with mooring sailboats and yachts and excursion boats, the owners of which offer cruises on the Bay of Kotor.
