Old Town
Local name: Stari Grad
Herceg Novi is one of the most interesting places in all of Montenegro. The town is a real mix of architectural styles - you can see here Oriental, Romanesque, Italian and Byzantine influences. In the Old Town it is worth seeing two fortresses - Kanli Kula and Jaka Kula. The first was built by the Turks and served as a prison, hence its name "Blood Tower". Today, performances, concerts and festivals take place here. The Jaka Kula Fortress (Forte Mare) was founded in the second half of the 14th century and also has traces of Ottoman influence.
The city is relatively young - in 1382 Bosnian King Stefan Tvrtko I founded it. It passed through many hands. It was ruled by Turks, Spaniards, Venetians and Austrians. Herceg Novi is currently hosting many cultural events. Noteworthy is the Mimosa Festival, which lasts from the end of December to the beginning of March, which is also the time of carnival. The Theater Festival takes place in April, while the International Book Fair is organized at the turn of July and August.
