Island of Saint George
Local name: Sveti Đorđe
Sveti Đorđe, or Island of St. George is one of the two islets off the coast of the city of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. There is a historic monastery of St. George, belonging to the Benedictines, as well as an old cemetery for the nobility of Perast. Characteristic, very tall cypress trees grow here. The island is unfortunately not open to tourists, it can only be viewed while sailing to the neighboring Virgin Mary Island on the Rock.
The monastery was first mentioned in sources from the 12th century, however, archaeological research confirmed the existence of the abbey on the island as early as the 9th century. It was destroyed many times, among others in 1667 by the earthquake, and in 1751 burned by the Turkish pirate Karadoz.
According to local legend, the French, in 1813, leading the island from shelling the city, unfortunately hit the beloved French officer. Her body was buried next to the monastery, and the desperate lover decided to remain there as a monk.
