Roman mosaics
Local name: Rimski mozaici
One of the biggest attractions of Risan are the ruins of a Roman villa with mosaic floors dating back to the 3rd century. Five mosaics testify to the city's former wealth. The most famous and the most beautiful is the one depicting Hypnos, the Greek dream god. This is his only image throughout the Balkans. Although this treasure was discovered as early as the beginning of the 19th century, the monument was made available to visitors only in 1970.
The described palace is one of the most important archaeological sites in Montenegro and as such is recognized as a protected cultural monument. Similarly, as the whole Risan located in the northern part of the Bay of Kotor, and therefore on the site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The town comes from the Illyrian and Hellenic-Roman periods. There was a busy port then, and the city itself was at the intersection of important Roman roads.
