Risan is a small town on the Bay of Kotor. Along with other cities in this region, it has been included in the UNESCO list since 1979. In its center, stone buildings and narrow streets have been preserved. The surrounding beaches are rocky, and due to the location on the Bay, the sea is very calm and warm.
The city is situated on the site of an Illyrian settlement that played a significant role in their country. There was, among others, royal mint. In Roman times, it became the largest maist of the region, and Roman mosaics preserved to this day are a trace of its former glory. After the fall of the Empire, Risan changed nationality many times. It was under the rule of Byzantium, Venice, Turkey, the Habsburg Monarchy and finally, after World War I, it found itself in the Kingdom of SHS, which was later renamed Yugoslavia.
The location of Risan on the Bay of Kotor makes it an important tourist center. There are many guesthouses and hotels here, and guests can relax on pebble beaches. The sea here is calm and warm, and you can sail on Boka Kotorska from a small marina. A good place to admire the whole area is the Sopot viewpoint located by the winding road around the bay. While visiting Risan, you can see historic stone houses, the church of St. Peter and Paul from the beginning of the 17th century, and outside the city, on the seashore, there is a beautifully situated Banja Monastery.
