The river gate is part of the impressive Kotor fortifications placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other defensive works from the time of the Venetian Republic. The building in its present shape was built in 1540 after repelling the attack of the Ottoman Empire, which sent 200 ships against Kotor commanded by the famous Barbarossa.
