St. Michael Orthodox Church
Local name: Crkva Svetog Mihaila
The church of Svet Mihail (St. Michael) was built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in the area where previously stood a temple belonging to the Benedictine abbey. It is located in the central part of the old town of Kotor. The interior of the temple is decorated with a large number of frescoes, best preserved on the north wall, where some of them date back to the 11th century. In addition to admiring the building itself, visitors can also see a collection of stone monuments located inside the church. During the earthquake in 1976, the temple was severely damaged.
The church Michał's is not the only monument of this type that we can admire in the city. Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in south-eastern Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. His most important monuments, in addition to the already described church, also include churches of st. Łukasz and św. Nicholas, cathedral of St. Tryfona and the Church of Our Lady of Healing the Sick.
