Gooise Meren is a commune of the three towns of Bussum, Muiden and Naarden. There are forts included in the Amsterdam fortress, which in the past defended it from the sea.
The first villages in this area were established in the early Middle Ages. In the 13th century, Muiden Castle was built at the mouth of the Vecht River. It is preserved in perfect condition to this day. The fortress is open to visitors and offers visitors plenty of attractions, including tours with animations and the ability to solve puzzles on their own.
In the 17th century the town of Naarden was fortified. Currently, its entire Old Town with the Naarden Town Hall is located within a bastion fortress surrounded by a moat. The interior can be accessed through the Utrechtse Gate, and the entire establishment is a perfect example of the seventeenth century military art. The Dutch Fortress Museum is located within the Old Town. There is also the Comenius Museum devoted to the figure of Jan Amos Comenius, one of the founders of modern pedagogy. He spent the last years of his life in Amsterdam and Naarden and was buried in the Calvinist Church in Naarden.
The youngest fortifications in the commune date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are the forts that are part of Amsterdam's defense line. They defended the entrance to the port there and were used until World War II. The most spectacular is Fort Pampus, built on an artificial island. You can also visit the onshore Fort H and Fort C and the Western Battery.
