Dam Square
Local name: De Dam
The name of Dam Square (dam) refers to the fact that it was built on the site of a causeway, which was built on the Amstel River in 1250. The most important building at Dam is the neoclassical Royal Palace. There is also a 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk and a white stone column - a memorial to the victims of World War II.
