Flower market
Local name: Bloemenmarkt
The only flower market in the world located partly on the water. The florists are located on the Singel canal quay, between Koningsplein and Muntplein. The stores are mostly placed on platforms, only some flower containers stand on the mainland.
Already in the 17th century, traders sailed around Amsterdam on boats and thus delivered flowers. The city designated a permanent commercial point for them on the banks of the Sint-Lucienwal canal. In the nineteenth century, this channel was filled up for sanitary reasons, and florists were moved to their present place.
Bloemenmarkt offers live and artificial flowers, cut and potted flowers, bulbs and seeds, as well as gardening accessories. The assortment varies depending on the season, but it is always fragrant and colorful.
