Anne Frank House
Local name: Anne Frank Huis
A museum dedicated to Anne Frank, who during the Second World War, together with her family and four friends, hid in rooms at the back of the building at Prinsengracht. The museum was opened here on May 3, 1960. Anna (Otto )'s father - the only survivor from the hideout - contributed significantly to this.
The building from 1635 housed the offices of Opekta and Pectacon (spice trading companies) in which Anna's father worked. In the back of the building there was an annex with an area of 46 m 2 , in which a hideout was arranged. Eight people were hiding there for over two years, until anonymous denunciation. The testimony of this period is a diary written by young Anna, who died of typhus in a concentration camp at the age of 15.
In the museum there are mainly souvenirs related to the life of Anna and her family in hiding. In addition, exhibitions and presentations are organized here regarding various forms of persecution, World War II and the Holocaust. Among the exhibits you can also see the Oscar, which Shelley Winters received for her role in the film "Diary of Anne Frank".
