ROMSEY tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Romsey is a historic city with medieval roots and a long trading tradition. It has numerous interesting monuments, including a 12th-century abbey and a half-timbered residence where King John without an Earth was said to have lived during his hunting trips.

The settlement in today's Romsey already existed in the Saxon times, and developed after the Norman invasion and the construction of Romsey Abbey in the 12th century. It was an important center of science and culture in this part of England, and representatives of the royal families of England and Scotland came here to study.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the Mottisfont Abbey was established near the city. After the abolition of the monasteries during the Reformation, it fell into the hands of one of the noble families, who built a Tudor-style residence on its site. Today, Mottisfont House and the gardens surrounding the manor are among the highlights of Romsey.

Around Romsey is the New Forest, one of the last remaining natural woodlands in the East of England. In the Middle Ages, it was a hunting ground for English kings. A reference to these times is the House of King John, where, according to legend, the ruler was supposed to live while hunting. These claims do not stand the test because, according to research, the house, although truly medieval and exceptionally beautiful, was built almost 50 years after John's death without the Earth.

On the outskirts of Romsey is the sprawling Broadlands mansion where British Prime Minister Lord Palmerstone lived until the death of Britain's Prime Minister. In the 20th century it was the seat of Lord Louis Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip. Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Diana spent their honeymoon on the estate.

Thanks to Lord Mountbatten, the War Memorial Park was created in Romsey, in which Japanese gun captured by Mountbatten's squad. An interesting monument of the city is the restored, 19th century lineman's house with full equipment.
