Lisse is a place that is primarily associated with tulips. The cultivation of these flowers in the area goes back to the Middle Ages. It is here that the most famous Dutch garden, Keukenhof, is located.

The beginnings of the village date back to the end of the 12th century. From the very beginning, it was associated with agriculture and flower trade. However, the real horticultural boom began at the end of the 19th century. Today, this area is the largest tulip growing region in the Netherlands.

Most tourists visit Lisse in spring. Millions of bulb flowers bloom in the Keukenhof Gardens. Tulips, sapphires, daffodils, daffodils, crocuses create wonderful compositions among lawns and trees. The hallmark of the gardens is the Keukenhof windmill, from whose terrace you can admire the park area.

Keukenhof Castle is located right next to the gardens. Its history dates back to the medieval times, but it owes its appearance to the neo-Gothic reconstruction from the 19th century. The interiors have retained their character from that period and you can admire a rich collection of furniture, knick-knacks and fittings. Another monument in the city comes from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Church of St. Agata.

Lisse is not only the garden itself, but also a multitude of flower growing and distribution companies. The Black Tulip Museum tells about the traditions of this activity, with exhibitions devoted to gardening, research on successive tulip hybrids and the reconstructed 18th century botanist's office.
