Stedelijk Museum
Local name: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
An art museum with one of the most important collections of modern art in Europe. You can admire the works of Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Kazimierz Malewicz, Andy Warhol.
The museum building was erected in 1893-1895 according to the design of AW Weissman, which referred to the 16th-century Dutch Renaissance. Initially, it exhibited a collection of antiques, coins, watches and jewelry by Zofia Augusta de Bruyn, who in 1891 donated her collection to the City Council of Amsterdam. In the early 1970s, Stedelijk only became a museum of modern art displaying approximately 90,000 exhibits, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, industrial and graphic designs.
Until 1972, the museum owned a significant collection of works by Vincent van Gogh. With the opening of the Vincent van Gogh Museum, which is located near Stedelijk, the paintings were moved there.
