Castle Keukenhof
Local name: Kasteel Keukenhof
Kasteel Keukenhof is the former estate of the Adriaen Maertenszoon Block, commander of the Dutch East India Company, built in 1641. Its present shape was given by architect Elie Saraber during the reconstruction in 1860. The castle is surrounded by one of the largest flower gardens in the world.
The neo-Gothic castle has survived with full equipment - furniture, trinkets and works of art from various periods. The interiors are a review of the tastes and luxury in which Dutch nobility lived for several centuries. After the death of the last owner, the property was handed over to a monument protection foundation.
The foundation manages the castle and 238-hectare estates, in which there is more than 30-hectare flower garden. Every year, about 7 million tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, lilies, crocuses and narcissuses bloom in it.
