AMERSFOORT tourist attractions

Amersfoort is a historic city with a network of old canals and a large part of the city's fortifications. The historic center has a compact, nice development and is now frequently visited by tourists.

The city received rights in the mid-thirteenth century and from that time began its development. It was primarily a trade and craft center, and its location meant that it was surrounded by defensive walls. The center, cut with canals, is still distinguished by a nice, relatively homogeneous development. Amersfoort's big attractions also include the well-preserved fortifications, including the Monnikendam and Koppelpoort water gates.

There are also some interesting museums that you can visit while exploring Amersfoort. The most famous of them is the Mondriaan Museum located in the birthplace of Piet Mondrian, one of the most important Dutch artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. There is also the Dutch Cavalry Museum located in former barracks. An important family attraction is the DierenPark Amersfoort zoo.
