Monnikendam - water gate
Local name: Monnikendam - waterpoort
Monnikendam is a water gate in the town of Amersfoort, which connects the two banks of the small stream Heiligenbergerbeek. The building consists of two towers on both sides of the river and a gate arch connecting them. Currently, the interior of the building is often used in the organization of weddings. There is also a restaurant here.
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the entire Amersfoort was surrounded by a system of defensive walls, of which several water gates were also part. The Monnikendam Gate was built in the first decade of the 15th century. The name of the gate literally means "gate of monks" and probably comes from the Augustinian order, which existed here in the Middle Ages, probably until 1420.
In the 20th century, the gate was renovated twice, first in 1946 and then in 1997. At that time, expansion was also carried out according to the plans of architect B. Dillen, which allowed to adapt the building to the needs of the restaurant.
