Xaghra is a small town on Gozo, known primarily for its amazing archaeological discoveries. The UNESCO-listed megalithic temples of Ggantija are located here.
According to archaeologists, the area where the village is located was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. In the 4th millennium BC, the Ggantija temple complex was built here, which was probably the place of worship of the goddess of fertility. Figures, pottery and other items found during the excavations can be viewed at the Ggantija Museum. There is also a stone circle in the area and two interesting caves, Xarri and Ninu.
The town itself, although not very large, has largely retained its traditional buildings. One of the few surviving 18th-century windmills on the island stands here. At the Ta'Kola Windmill Museum, you can see the equipment of craft workshops from the surrounding area. An interesting monument is also the Renaissance-Baroque Xangra Church with a huge statue of the Mother of God called il-Bambina.
The vicinity of Xangra is also a good place to relax by the sea. The largest sandy Ramla Beach in Gozo is located here. It is not developed, but this adds to its charm, and you can take advantage of the offer of several bars and restaurants nearby.
