Xaghra Parish Church is the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the locals call Il-Vitorja, meaning "the church of victory". This is a reference to the memorable date of September 8, 1565, when on the official day of the birth of Mary, the Knights of the Order of Saint. John, assisted by the inhabitants of Malta, repelled the overwhelming Turkish forces.
Xaghra Parish Church is wonderfully finished with marble, but its main attraction - for both the faithful and tourists - is the impressive statue of the young Virgin Mary, which is called il-Bambina. The sculpture was brought in in 1878 from Marseille.
Xaghra Parish Church, like many other churches in Malta, was built on the site of a pre-existing building at the end of the 17th century. The cornerstone was laid in 1815. It is not known when exactly the construction was completed - it is certain that the temple was consecrated in 1878.
