Antgantija is an archaeological site on the island of Gozo, where two megalithic temples were discovered - one of the oldest free-standing buildings in the world. The temples are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands list, where they were placed under number 00001, as the culturally most valuable and oldest monument of Malta.
Establishment of temple objects in antgantija is estimated for the period between the fifth and fourth millennium BC. The walls of the building preserved until today reach 6 m, but it is estimated that originally they were much higher. Stone blocks up to 50 tons were used for their erection. This demonstrates the high civilizational and cultural development of the people who built it.
It is believed that the temples were places of fertility worship. Finds from archaeological works point to the dominant position of women among prehistoric peoples living in Malta.
