Ghawdex Cathedral

Local name: Katidral ta Għawdex

Located inside: Cittadella

Katidral ta Għawdex is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary built in 1697-1711 on the site of the previous church, destroyed by the earthquake in 1693. An interesting show of the illusionist painting is an interesting feature of the cathedral's interior. The fresco on the vault dating from 1739 gives the impression that the cathedral has a convex dome when, in fact, the building is closed with a flat roof.

The masterful fresco was made by Antonio Manuele, commissioned by the parish, which did not have adequate funds to restore the damaged dome. The current building was built entirely of local limestone according to the design of the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafy.

In front of the entrance to the cathedral, two life-size monuments were set up - the sculpture on the left shows Pope Pius IX, on the right we can see Pope John Paul II.
